A vast developing wetland of reedbeds and open water created from former mineral workings beside the Great Ouse.
Ouse Fen is a large-scale wetland being created on land previously worked for minerals. Water, reedbed and grassland are developing into habitats for birds and other wildlife, making the reserve especially interesting as a landscape in progress. Open horizons and changing water levels mean no two visits feel quite the same. The project also tells a wider fenland story: human activity has repeatedly altered this land, and restoration is now shaping its next chapter.
