A haunting birch woodland and remnant raised bog, home to the famous Holme Posts marking dramatic peat shrinkage below sea level.
Holme Fen preserves part of a once extensive raised bog and now includes distinctive birch woodland and wetland habitat. The Holme Posts are a powerful marker of peat loss: their position helps visitors grasp how dramatically the land surface fell after drainage. Paths lead through a landscape that can feel surprisingly enclosed for the Fens, before opening out to wider views. As part of the Great Fen, the reserve also points to a future of habitat restoration and better connections between surviving pockets of wildlife-rich land.
