The building grew from the medieval abbey church and remains a place of worship at the heart of the city. Its vast Romanesque interior leads to the striking Gothic west front, while the painted wooden nave ceiling rewards a slow look upwards. Katharine of Aragon is buried here; Mary, Queen of Scots was also buried here before her remains were moved to Westminster Abbey. A visit links Norman architecture, royal history and a living programme of music and services in one remarkable setting.
